Market Size for Raspberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, and Cranberries in SADC
For the fourth year in a row, the SADC market for raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -1.5% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Production of Raspberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, and Cranberries in SADC
In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry production was South Africa (X tons), comprising approx. 88% of total volume. Moreover, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Zimbabwe (X tons), ninefold.
In South Africa, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry production increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2012-2022.
The average raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry yield soared to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by 29% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, saw a mild slump. Over the period under review, the raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries were harvested in SADC; falling by -10.1% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 39%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Exports of Raspberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, and Cranberries
Exports in SADC
For the ninth consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in overseas shipments of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries, which increased by 24% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 75%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the key exporter of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries, comprising 86% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), comprising a 13% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry exports from South Africa stood at +27.6%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+88.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +88.7% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Zimbabwe increased by +13 percentage points.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports.
In South Africa, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry exports expanded at an average annual rate of +23.2% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -18.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-3.5%).
Imports of Raspberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, and Cranberries
Imports in SADC
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries, when their volume increased by 70% to X tons. Overall, imports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 359% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 157% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 72% of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Botswana (X tons). All these countries together held near 19% share of total imports. The following importers - Namibia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - together made up 5.8% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +23.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+36.6%), Mozambique (+20.6%), Namibia (+18.2%) and Botswana (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +36.6% from 2012-2022. South Africa (+11 p.p.) and Mauritius (+7.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Botswana saw its share reduced by -4.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries in SADC, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 6.4% share.
In South Africa, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry imports expanded at an average annual rate of +25.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+33.5% per year) and Botswana (+14.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
