In 2021, the SADC cows skin market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Cows Skin Production in SADC
In value terms, cows skin production rose rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 49%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), with a combined 62% share of total production. These countries were followed by Angola, Madagascar, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe, which together accounted for a further 30%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +9.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cows Skin Exports
Exports in SADC
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of raw hides and skins of bovine animals decreased by -64.2% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports saw a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 178% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cows skin exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 220% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Tanzania prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 76% of total exports in 2021. Madagascar (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.6% share, followed by Malawi (5.7%) and Botswana (5.3%). The following exporters - Mauritius (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.6% share of total exports.
Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raw hides and skins of bovine animals exports, with a CAGR of +51.3% from 2012 to 2021. Malawi (-3.0%), Madagascar (-7.9%), Mauritius (-12.0%), Botswana (-30.0%) and South Africa (-32.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+75 p.p.) and Malawi (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa and Botswana saw its share reduced by -23.8% and -52.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest cows skin supplier in SADC, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 3.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 2.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Tanzania totaled +63.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-35.0% per year) and Madagascar (-16.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, overseas purchases of raw hides and skins of bovine animals were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Overall, imports saw a measured increase. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cows skin imports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 59%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 95% of total imports in 2021. Namibia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Namibia (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +6.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Africa (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw hides and skins of bovine animals in SADC, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 5.6% share of total imports.
In South Africa, cows skin imports contracted by an average annual rate of -15.7% over the period from 2012-2021.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -74.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa amounted to $X per ton.
