In 2021, the SADC cattle hide and skin market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cattle hide and skin yield reduced to X kg per head in 2021, standing approx. at the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the number of animals slaughtered for cattle hide and skin production in SADC rose significantly to X heads, surging by 8.3% on 2020 figures. This number increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the number of producing animals reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, overseas shipments of raw hides and skins of cattle increased by 20% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 81%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporter of raw hides and skins of cattle in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 78% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), constituting an 11% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.6% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+15.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Botswana (-8.9%) and Tanzania (-26.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +27 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest cattle hide and skin supplier in SADC, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -9.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (-4.1% per year) and Botswana (-20.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 16%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+29.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of raw hides and skins of cattle increased by 95% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the key importer of raw hides and skins of cattle in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 79% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), committing an 18% share of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cattle hide and skin imports into South Africa stood at -8.7%. At the same time, Tanzania (+22.3%) and Namibia (+19.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +22.3% from 2012-2021. While the share of Namibia (+16 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-15.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest cattle hide and skin importing markets in SADC were Namibia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tanzania ($X), together accounting for 92% of total imports.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +24.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 49%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
