Reclaimed Rubber Market Size in SADC

The SADC reclaimed rubber market rose rapidly to $X in 2021, growing by 8.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption enjoyed a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Reclaimed Rubber Production in SADC

In value terms, reclaimed rubber production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of reclaimed rubber decreased by -47.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 817% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, reclaimed rubber exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 372% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total exports in 2021.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the reclaimed rubber exports, with a CAGR of +25.6% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of South Africa (+20 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest reclaimed rubber supplier in SADC.

In South Africa, reclaimed rubber exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 29% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -17.7% per year.

Reclaimed Rubber Imports

Imports in SADC

Reclaimed rubber imports soared to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 60% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, reclaimed rubber imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total imports in 2021.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +68.1%).

In value terms, the largest reclaimed rubber importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X) and Tanzania ($X).

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +76.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -8.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+5.0%).
