Rice Bran Market Size in SADC
The SADC rice bran market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rice bran production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 51%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of rice bran decreased by -6.8% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 130% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, rice bran exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 101% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
Exports by Country
Malawi represented the main exporter of rice bran in SADC, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 68% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), generating a 25% share of total exports. Mozambique (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Malawi was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rice bran exports, with a CAGR of +18.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+16.7%) and Mozambique (+11.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malawi and Tanzania increased by +18 and +4.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Malawi ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Mozambique ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 93% share of total exports.
Mozambique, with a CAGR of +25.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 29%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+12.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, the amount of rice bran imported in SADC surged to X tons, growing by 253% compared with 2020. Overall, imports recorded a significant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, rice bran imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate significant growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Angola (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) dominates imports structure, together constituting 92% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), mixing up a 6.9% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Angola (with a CAGR of +94.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Angola ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rice bran in SADC, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 7.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Angola totaled +98.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+13.2% per year) and Zimbabwe (-5.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a resilient increase. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
