Exports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X units of ride-on compaction equipment were exported in SADC; picking up by 12% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ride-on compaction equipment exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the largest exporter of ride-on compaction equipment, constituting 65% of total exports. Botswana (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Zambia (8.7%). The following exporters - Angola (X units) and Tanzania (X units) - each accounted for a 4.1% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+19.0%), Botswana (+8.2%) and Angola (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Botswana (+7.1 p.p.), Zambia (+7.1 p.p.) and South Africa (+6.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tanzania saw its share reduced by -3.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest ride-on compaction equipment supplier in SADC, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with an 8.1% share.

In South Africa, ride-on compaction equipment exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+18.7% per year) and Botswana (+0.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 14%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

Ride-on compaction equipment imports skyrocketed to X units in 2022, picking up by 28% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ride-on compaction equipment imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the major importer of ride-on compaction equipment, committing 48% of total imports. Zimbabwe (X units) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (7.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (5.3%) and Mozambique (4.6%). The following importers - Namibia (X units) and Botswana (X units) - together made up 7.7% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ride-on compaction equipment imports into South Africa stood at -5.5%. At the same time, Botswana (+21.7%), Zimbabwe (+14.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.6%) and Namibia (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-3.2%) and Mozambique (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Zimbabwe (+13 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.1 p.p.), Botswana (+3 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Mozambique (-4.2 p.p.) and South Africa (-7.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ride-on compaction equipment in SADC, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -4.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (-4.3% per year) and Zimbabwe (+9.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -7.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
