In value terms, ethylene polymer rigid pipes exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Mauritius (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - each reached a 3.9% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+42.7%) and Tanzania (+21.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +42.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mauritius (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-3.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest ethylene polymer rigid pipes supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 2.2% share of total exports.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of rigid tubes, pipes and hoses of polymers of ethylene were imported in SADC; picking up by 18% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ethylene polymer rigid pipes imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 45% of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Zambia (11%), Tanzania (8.3%), Namibia (4.9%) and Botswana (4.8%). Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to ethylene polymer rigid pipes imports into Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at +6.4%. At the same time, Mozambique (+28.2%), Tanzania (+15.6%) and Namibia (+9.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.2% from 2012-2021. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zambia (-1.2%) and Zimbabwe (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Tanzania and Namibia increased by +25, +11, +6.6 and +3.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rigid tubes, pipes and hoses of polymers of ethylene in SADC, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 9.3% share.

In Democratic Republic of the Congo, ethylene polymer rigid pipes imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mozambique (+27.8% per year) and Zambia (-2.8% per year).
