The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sack kraft paper exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tanzania represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), making up a 20% share of total exports. Botswana (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of sack kraft paper. At the same time, Botswana (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +8.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-17.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania and Botswana increased by +39 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest sack kraft paper supplier in SADC, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

In Tanzania, sack kraft paper exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-15.9% per year) and Botswana (+3.6% per year).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sack kraft paper imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Africa dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 94% of total imports in 2022. Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sack kraft paper imports, with a CAGR of +5.0% from 2012 to 2022. Angola (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-2.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sack kraft paper in SADC, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 3.3% share of total imports.
