Paper Bag Market Size in SADC

The SADC paper bag market rose notably to $X in 2021, increasing by 8.8% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper bag production rose notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, exports of sacks and bags of paper in SADC amounted to X tons, surging by 1.9% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper bag exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 82% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Zimbabwe (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 16% of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of sacks and bags of paper. At the same time, Zambia (+15.0%), Mauritius (+3.4%) and Madagascar (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Lesotho (-2.8%) and Zimbabwe (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+15 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest paper bag supplier in SADC, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Madagascar ($X), with a 4.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -1.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Madagascar (+5.5% per year) and Mauritius (+0.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight decrease. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, purchases abroad of sacks and bags of paper was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 8.9%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paper bag imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) represented roughly 32% of total imports in 2021. Angola (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Botswana (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 51% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Swaziland (with a CAGR of +14.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sacks and bags of paper in SADC, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +2.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-6.1% per year) and Mozambique (+0.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
