In value terms, ethylene polymer bag exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +75.0% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 19%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 82% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), committing an 8.7% share of total exports. Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene exports, with a CAGR of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Namibia (-1.0%), Botswana (-2.0%) and Malawi (-4.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, ethylene polymer bag imports contracted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Angola (X tons) represented the key importer of sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene, making up 35% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (15%), Mozambique (14%) and Namibia (5.3%). Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +23.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -13.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible shrinkage.
