Safety Headgear Market Size in SADC

The SADC safety headgear market shrank to $X in 2021, waning by -10.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +9.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 413%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, safety headgear exports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 186%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), constituting a 6.5% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +21.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+116.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +116.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mauritius (+6.4 p.p.) and South Africa (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest safety headgear supplier in SADC, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 1,068%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while South Africa amounted to $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (-15.0%).

Imports in SADC

In 2021, imports of safety headgear in SADC reduced to X units, shrinking by -15% on 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, recorded moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 139% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, safety headgear imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a mild shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 55% of total imports in 2021. Madagascar (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8.2% share, followed by Mauritius (6.2%), Mozambique (5.9%), Tanzania (5.4%) and Zimbabwe (5.1%). Zambia (X units) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Madagascar (+20.3%), Mauritius (+13.5%), Zambia (+13.4%), Tanzania (+9.4%), Mozambique (+6.9%) and Zimbabwe (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.3% from 2012-2021. While the share of Madagascar (+6.1 p.p.), Mauritius (+3.5 p.p.), Zambia (+2.4 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.2 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-2.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported safety headgear in SADC, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with an 8.8% share.

In South Africa, safety headgear imports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+15.0% per year) and Zambia (+9.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced slump. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
