Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. In value terms, safety valve production contracted remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 339%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of safety or relief valves for pipes, boiler shells, tanks and vats decreased by -8.4% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 32%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, safety valve exports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 25%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X units), mixing up a 5.4% share of total exports. The following exporters - Angola (X units) and Zambia (X units) - together made up 6.2% of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+21.8%), Namibia (+18.7%) and Angola (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.8% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Namibia, Angola and Zambia increased by +4.8, +2.7 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest safety valve supplier in SADC, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 5.6% share.
In South Africa, safety valve exports contracted by an average annual rate of -8.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-4.4% per year) and Namibia (+13.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -14.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Safety Valve Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2021, safety valve imports in SADC shrank to X units, reducing by -3.1% against the previous year. In general, imports recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 143% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, safety valve imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 189% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa (X units) and Angola (X units) prevails in imports structure, together creating 74% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), constituting a 4.7% share of total imports. The following importers - Mauritius (X units), Tanzania (X units), Mozambique (X units), Zambia (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Namibia (X units) and Botswana (X units) - together made up 19% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +8.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest safety valve importing markets in SADC were Angola ($X), South Africa ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a combined 89% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mauritius and Botswana, which together accounted for a further 9.6%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +7.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -17.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 71% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then reduced notably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Mauritius ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
