Sailboat Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC sailboat market decreased by -1.4% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. The total consumption indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -31.0% against 2018 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Sailboat Production in SADC

In value terms, sailboat production rose slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -26.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Sailboat Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2021, sailboat exports in SADC surged to X units, jumping by 55% against the year before. Overall, exports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 124%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sailboat exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X units), together resulting at 100% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor exports, with a CAGR of +9.1% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of South Africa (+7.1 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest sailboat supplier in SADC.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +8.1%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 84% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -0.9% per year.

Sailboat Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X units of sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor were imported in SADC; which is down by -2.4% on 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, saw tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 69%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sailboat imports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 83%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Zambia (X units) represented the key importer of sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor, mixing up 48% of total imports. Seychelles (X units) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (13%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (9.6%). The following importers - Angola (X units), Tanzania (X units), Malawi (X units) and Madagascar (X units) - together made up 11% of total imports.

Zambia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor imports, with a CAGR of +48.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Seychelles (+25.5%), Madagascar (+9.9%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.8%) and Malawi (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Angola (-2.8%), Tanzania (-12.1%) and South Africa (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+46 p.p.) and Seychelles (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola, Tanzania and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.1%, -9.6% and -45.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Seychelles ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tanzania ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 94% share of total imports. Madagascar, Zambia, Malawi, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 1.9%.

Zambia, with a CAGR of +30.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 3.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 299%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per unit), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+21.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
