Saturated Acyclic Hydrocarbons Market Size in SADC

The SADC saturated acyclic hydrocarbons market fell modestly to $X in 2022, reducing by -3.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, saturated acyclic hydrocarbons production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 23%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons decreased by -14% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, saturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 102% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total exports in 2022.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the saturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports, with a CAGR of -12.0% from 2012 to 2022. South Africa (+52 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest saturated acyclic hydrocarbons supplier in SADC.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -11.1%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to +1.0% per year.

Saturated Acyclic Hydrocarbons Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, overseas purchases of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons decreased by -11.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 200%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, saturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 187%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main importer of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons, committing 71% of total imports. Zambia (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zimbabwe (5.1%). The following importers - Malawi (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - each recorded an 8.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to saturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports into South Africa stood at +16.7%. At the same time, Tanzania (+27.5%), Zambia (+20.2%) and Malawi (+19.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +27.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-2.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+12 p.p.), Zambia (+5 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.7 p.p.) and Malawi (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zimbabwe saw its share reduced by -19% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported saturated acyclic hydrocarbons in SADC, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +18.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zambia (+17.5% per year) and Zimbabwe (+0.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 51% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
