The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of sauces and seasonings, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sauces and seasonings exports, with a CAGR of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest sauce and seasoning supplier in SADC.

Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of sauces and seasonings, when their volume decreased by -7% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, sauce and seasoning imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Botswana (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented the key importers of sauces and seasonings in 2021, accounting for approx. 19% and 17% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together mixing up a 50% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +13.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 51% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, Tanzania, Angola, Mozambique and Zambia, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +16.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight slump. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
