Sausage Market Size in SADC

The SADC sausage market expanded remarkably to $X in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Sausage Production in SADC

In value terms, sausage production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +65.2% against 2015 indices. As a result, production attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of sausages and similar products of meat exported in SADC surged to X tons, with an increase of 18% compared with the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sausage exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of sausages and similar products of meat, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sausages and similar products of meat exports, with a CAGR of +3.6% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of South Africa (+2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest sausage supplier in SADC.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +3.1%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -0.4% per year.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, supplies from abroad of sausages and similar products of meat was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sausage imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Angola (X tons) represented the major importer of sausages and similar products of meat, committing 64% of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (9.9%). The following importers - Mauritius (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - together made up 9.7% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sausage imports into Angola stood at -4.4%. At the same time, Lesotho (+19.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+14.1%) and Mozambique (+12.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.3% from 2012-2021. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Namibia (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Lesotho (+11 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.3 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola saw its share reduced by -19.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Angola ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sausages and similar products of meat in SADC, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lesotho ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Angola amounted to -8.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lesotho (+6.7% per year) and Mauritius (-1.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
