Imports of saw logs and veneer logs (coniferous) skyrocketed to X cubic meters in 2021, growing by 43% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 162%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 200% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Mozambique was the main importer of saw logs and veneer logs (coniferous) in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X cubic meters, which was near 39% of total imports in 2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X cubic meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Botswana (X cubic meters) and Lesotho (X cubic meters). All these countries together held near 50% share of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X cubic meters), Mauritius (X cubic meters) and Comoros (X cubic meters) - together made up 7.1% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to saw logs and veneer logs (coniferous) imports into Mozambique stood at +32.7%. At the same time, Comoros (+46.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+45.2%), Lesotho (+29.6%), Tanzania (+12.2%), Mauritius (+6.0%) and Botswana (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Comoros emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +46.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mozambique, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Lesotho increased by +30, +16 and +11 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Botswana ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Lesotho ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 75% of total imports. Mauritius, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Comoros lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Among the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +32.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, waning by -16.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per cubic meter), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+17.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
