Stone sawing machine exports shrank sharply to X units in 2021, falling by -41.3% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 217% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, stone sawing machine exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 373% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporter of sawing machines for working stone, ceramics and concrete in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was near 73% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units), achieving a 20% share of total exports. The following exporters - Botswana (X units) and Mauritius (X units) - together made up 5.2% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -19.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+40.6%), Botswana (+22.0%) and Mauritius (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +40.6% from 2012-2021. While the share of Angola (+20 p.p.), Botswana (+2.7 p.p.) and Mauritius (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-22.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest stone sawing machine supplier in SADC, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -18.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (+40.7% per year) and Angola (+18.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 196% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 325% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per unit), while Angola ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+13.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

For the third year in a row, SADC recorded growth in purchases abroad of sawing machines for working stone, ceramics and concrete, which increased by 156% to X units in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, stone sawing machine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +18.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the main importer of sawing machines for working stone, ceramics and concrete, generating 70% of total imports. Angola (X units) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zimbabwe (6.7%) and Zambia (5.2%). Namibia (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+87.1%), Zambia (+58.5%) and Angola (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +87.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-4.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Angola (+9.1 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+6.7 p.p.) and Zambia (+5.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-21.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest stone sawing machine importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Namibia ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Zimbabwe and Zambia, which together accounted for a further 17%.

Among the main importing countries, Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +75.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, waning by -41.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 384% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+15.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
