Market Size for Scissors and Tailor Shears in SADC

The SADC scissors and tailor shears market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -34.2% against 2015 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

The shipments of the one major exporters of scissors and tailor shears, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of scissors and tailor shears. While the share of South Africa (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest scissors and tailor shears supplier in SADC.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 42%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

In 2021, imports of scissors and tailor shears in SADC soared to X units, picking up by 27% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, scissors and tailor shears imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the main importer of scissors and tailor shears in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was approx. 44% of total imports in 2021. Tanzania (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Angola (13%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (7.6%) and Madagascar (5.6%). Mozambique (X units), Botswana (X units) and Mauritius (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of scissors and tailor shears. At the same time, Madagascar (+5.2%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.2%), Tanzania (+2.3%) and Mozambique (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012-2021. Mauritius, Angola and Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Tanzania (+3.1 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.7 p.p.) and Madagascar (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported scissors and tailor shears in SADC, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -1.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+9.1% per year) and Angola (+1.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 33%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
