In 2022, shipments abroad of seats for motor vehicles decreased by -36.5% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after seven years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vehicle seat imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +40.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the largest importer of seats for motor vehicles in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was near 52% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), comprising a 33% share of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X units), Botswana (X units), Angola (X units) and Namibia (X units) - together made up 10% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +18.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported seats for motor vehicles in SADC, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 7.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +2.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+5.6% per year) and Namibia (+7.2% per year).

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -12.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while Mauritius ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+7.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
