Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -22.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main importer of secateurs and similar one-handed pruners and shears, mixing up 52% of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (12%) and Angola (5.3%). The following importers - Mauritius (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.6% share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+24.6%), Tanzania (+17.3%), Mauritius (+6.8%) and Angola (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +24.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-8.6%) and Namibia (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mozambique and Tanzania increased by +14 and +7.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported secateurs and similar one-handed pruners and shears in SADC, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 7.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 4.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +2.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+21.0% per year) and Mozambique (+20.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
