Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 1,527% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, self-propelled boring machinery exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate moderate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the main exporter of self-propelled boring or sinking machinery in SADC, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2022. Botswana (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Zambia (X units). All these countries together held approx. 21% share of total exports. Namibia (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Tanzania (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +5.3% from 2012-2022. Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zambia (-2.6%), Namibia (-4.3%) and Tanzania (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+8.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-10.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest self-propelled boring machinery supplier in SADC, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 4.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 4.1% share.
In South Africa, self-propelled boring machinery exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (-7.4% per year) and Zambia (-3.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 3,180%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+15.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, purchases abroad of self-propelled boring or sinking machinery increased by 27% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 71%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, self-propelled boring machinery imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 62% of total imports in 2022. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) took a 9.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zambia (7.1%) and Namibia (5.9%). Tanzania (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Botswana (X units) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to self-propelled boring machinery imports into South Africa stood at -6.9%. At the same time, Namibia (+19.5%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+16.1%) and Zimbabwe (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Botswana (-2.7%), Tanzania (-5.6%) and Zambia (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.6 p.p.), Namibia (+5.3 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Zambia (-3.4 p.p.) and South Africa (-12.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported self-propelled boring or sinking machinery in SADC, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 7.3% share.
In South Africa, self-propelled boring machinery imports declined by an average annual rate of -5.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (-10.5% per year) and Namibia (+21.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 102%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
