In value terms, semiconductor LED production reduced notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
Semiconductor LED exports contracted to X units in 2021, shrinking by -11.4% on 2020 figures. In general, exports faced a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 251%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, semiconductor LED exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 442%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of around X units, which recorded 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X units), achieving a 12% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tanzania (X units) and Zambia (X units) - each accounted for a 4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to semiconductor LED exports from South Africa stood at -12.0%. At the same time, Tanzania (+55.6%), Zambia (+51.4%) and Namibia (+19.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +55.6% from 2012-2021. Namibia (+11 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.1 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -15.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest semiconductor LED supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 1.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +7.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+8.1% per year) and Tanzania (+41.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 60% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 183%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+21.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, the amount of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) imported in SADC reduced to X units, waning by -13.5% on the previous year. In general, imports saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 966% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, semiconductor LED imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 461% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Madagascar (X units), distantly followed by Namibia (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Mozambique (X units), Malawi (X units), Tanzania (X units), South Africa (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) were the main importers of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs), together achieving 90% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +52.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) in SADC, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +20.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Madagascar (+36.8% per year) and Namibia (+26.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 83% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 818%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
