Sesame Oil Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC sesame oil market decreased by -4.9% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Sesame Oil Production in SADC

In value terms, sesame oil production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 123%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of sesame oil, when their volume increased by 31% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw a precipitous decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 243%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sesame oil exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 250% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tanzania represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), making up a 14% share of total exports. Mozambique (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sesame oil exports from Tanzania stood at -23.4%. At the same time, South Africa (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mozambique (-7.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+13 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tanzania saw its share reduced by -15.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest sesame oil supplier in SADC, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

In Tanzania, sesame oil exports decreased by an average annual rate of -17.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+5.7% per year) and South Africa (+3.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -13.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 39%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+14.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Sesame Oil Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, supplies from abroad of sesame oil increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 77%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, sesame oil imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 38%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Mozambique (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 55% of total imports in 2021. Botswana (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Namibia (14%) and Tanzania (4.6%). Mauritius (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Botswana (with a CAGR of +78.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sesame oil importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Botswana ($X), together accounting for 68% of total imports.

Botswana, with a CAGR of +62.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 8.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
