In value terms, exports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in preparations structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2022. Zambia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to shampoo, hair lacquer and other preparations exports from South Africa stood at -4.7%. Imports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations imported in SADC expanded remarkably to X tons, picking up by 12% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, showed a slight descent. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations. At the same time, Lesotho (+7.0%), Madagascar (+4.6%), Mozambique (+3.6%), Tanzania (+1.8%) and Mauritius (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +7.0% from 2012-2022. Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia and Malawi experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zambia (-2.0%) and Angola (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+3.8 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.2 p.p.), Madagascar (+2 p.p.), Lesotho (+1.7 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-13.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations in SADC, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with an 8% share.

In South Africa, imports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations contracted by an average annual rate of -1.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+2.8% per year) and Tanzania (-1.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country
