Sheep Leather Market Size in SADC

The SADC sheep leather market rose remarkably to $X in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. In 2021, the amount of sheep or lamb skin leather exported in SADC fell remarkably to X square meters, with a decrease of -35.4% on the previous year. Overall, exports saw a dramatic setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 119%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sheep leather exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 101%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Swaziland (X square meters), Namibia (X square meters) and Tanzania (X square meters), together reaching 85% of total export. Zambia (X square meters) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by South Africa (4.9%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Swaziland (with a CAGR of +38.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Zambia ($X) remains the largest sheep leather supplier in SADC, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Zambia amounted to +7.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (+55.8% per year) and Namibia (-20.5% per year).

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per square meter, with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 134%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per square meter), while Tanzania ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+14.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of sheep or lamb skin leather imported in SADC skyrocketed to X square meters, picking up by 32% against the previous year. Overall, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 98%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Swaziland (+34 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Swaziland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheep or lamb skin leather in SADC, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Swaziland stood at +52.4%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per square meter, with an increase of 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt contraction.
