In 2022, the SADC sheepskin and lambskin market increased by 9.5% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of sheepskin and lambskin production was South Africa (X tons), accounting for 67% of total volume. Moreover, sheepskin and lambskin production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tanzania (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Namibia (X tons), with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (-1.1% per year) and Namibia (-5.8% per year).

The average sheepskin and lambskin yield reduced to X kg per head in 2022, with a decrease of -2.5% compared with the year before. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 67%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the sheepskin and lambskin yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for sheepskin and lambskin production in SADC; with an increase of 3.5% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals, however, continues to indicate a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, this number reached the peak level at X heads in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, producing animals stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, sheepskin and lambskin exports in SADC fell to X tons, which is down by -10.1% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 198% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 108%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2022.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sheep or lamb skins (without wool) exports, with a CAGR of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of South Africa (+5.3 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest sheepskin and lambskin supplier in SADC.

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) decreased by -18.7% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports faced a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 77%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin imports fell notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a sharp setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main importer of sheep or lamb skins (without wool), comprising 84% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), creating a 14% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sheepskin and lambskin imports into Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at +3.5%. At the same time, Namibia (+59.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +59.0% from 2012-2022. Democratic Republic of the Congo (+84 p.p.) and Namibia (+14 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -12.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a deep contraction.
