In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in the SADC sheepskin and lambskin market, when its value increased by 0.2% to $X. Overall, consumption showed a abrupt decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, the sheepskin and lambskin yield hit record highs at X kg per head in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for sheepskin and lambskin production in SADC; with a decrease of -6.5% on 2020. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals continues to indicate a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the number of producing animals increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number attained the peak level at X heads in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, producing animals failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

Sheepskin and lambskin exports reduced modestly to X tons in 2021, waning by -1.6% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 31%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 151%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 92% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) imported in SADC contracted to X tons, which is down by -7.1% compared with 2020. In general, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 71%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin imports declined notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 53%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo represented the key importer of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 82% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), generating an 11% share of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each accounted for a 5.6% share of total imports.

Democratic Republic of the Congo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sheep or lamb skins (without wool) imports, with a CAGR of +59.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+25.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Namibia (-16.0%) and South Africa (-26.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+82 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-3.5 p.p.) and South Africa (-76.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), South Africa ($X) and Namibia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 89% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Tanzania, which accounted for a further 3.9%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +14.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -25.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a dramatic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
