After two years of decline, overseas shipments of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel) increased by 9.3% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 262% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sheet piling exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 124%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), comprising a 13% share of total exports. Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sheet piling exports from South Africa stood at -3.9%. At the same time, Mauritius (+20.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +19 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sheet piling supplier in SADC, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 6.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -6.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (-18.4% per year) and Mauritius (+21.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 334%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Sheet Piling Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2021, supplies from abroad of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel) decreased by -50.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sheet piling imports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) represented the largest importers of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel), together achieving 81% of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +4.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Mozambique ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 49% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Lesotho lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.
Among the main importing countries, Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +3.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
