Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the key exporter of shelled walnuts, committing 89% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), making up an 11% share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the shelled walnuts exports, with a CAGR of +72.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+13.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa (+78 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mozambique saw its share reduced by -77.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest shelled walnut supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 7.4% share of total exports.

In South Africa, shelled walnut exports increased at an average annual rate of +54.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-10.0%).

South Africa was the major importer of shelled walnuts in SADC, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 75% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together constituting a 17% share of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +14.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+32.9%) and Swaziland (+16.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +32.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+28 p.p.), Swaziland (+5.3 p.p.) and Mauritius (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-36.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Swaziland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported shelled walnuts in SADC, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Swaziland totaled +16.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+29.2% per year) and Angola (-15.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -48.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (-0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
