There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of siliceous fossil meals (kieselguhr, tripolite and diatomite) dropped dramatically to X tons in 2021, waning by -25.5% against the previous year. Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+19.0%), Zambia (+8.1%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.7%) and Madagascar (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.0% from 2012-2021. Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Angola, Zambia and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +13, +2.8 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 71% of total imports.

Angola, with a CAGR of +24.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
