In 2022, overseas shipments of ski-suits of knitted or crocheted textiles were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports recorded a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 617%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, knitted ski-suit exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 561% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Swaziland dominates exports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Lesotho (X units), mixing up a 6.6% share of total exports. Madagascar (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to knitted ski-suit exports from Swaziland stood at +1.3%. At the same time, Lesotho (+48.0%) and Madagascar (+17.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +48.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Lesotho (+6.5 p.p.) and Madagascar (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Swaziland (-2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Swaziland ($X) remains the largest knitted ski-suit supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lesotho ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports.

In Swaziland, knitted ski-suit exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lesotho (+48.7% per year) and Madagascar (+13.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 4.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 165%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per unit), while Madagascar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lesotho (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of ski-suits of knitted or crocheted textiles increased by 83% to X units in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, knitted ski-suit imports declined notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 184%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Zambia was the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which resulted at 39% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), Botswana (X units), Angola (X units) and Madagascar (X units), together constituting a 47% share of total imports. The following importers - Swaziland (X units) and Comoros (X units) - each amounted to a 6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to knitted ski-suit imports into Zambia stood at -2.0%. At the same time, Comoros (+50.4%), Madagascar (+28.9%), Botswana (+19.5%), Swaziland (+17.5%) and South Africa (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Comoros emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +50.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-17.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Zambia (+13 p.p.), Botswana (+11 p.p.), Madagascar (+8.6 p.p.), South Africa (+7.1 p.p.), Swaziland (+2.8 p.p.) and Comoros (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-29.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest knitted ski-suit importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Botswana ($X), together accounting for 74% of total imports. Madagascar, Zambia, Swaziland and Comoros lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +30.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -61% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 75%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
