In 2021, shipments abroad of smoked fish other than salmon and herring increased by 7.8% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, exports of smoked fish other than salmon and herring skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the main exporter of smoked fish other than salmon and herring in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 57% of total exports in 2021. Namibia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together held near 40% share of total exports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to smoked fish other than salmon and herring exports from South Africa stood at -2.9%. At the same time, Mozambique (+52.5%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+15.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +52.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+15 p.p.), Mozambique (+12 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-30.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest smoked fish other than salmon and herring supplier in SADC, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -4.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (-12.7% per year) and Mozambique (+69.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Smoked Fish Other than Salmon and Herring
Imports in SADC
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of smoked fish other than salmon and herring, when their volume decreased by -2.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 241% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of smoked fish other than salmon and herring surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 157% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key importer of smoked fish other than salmon and herring, committing 64% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), mixing up a 30% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to smoked fish other than salmon and herring imports into South Africa stood at -13.6%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+101.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +101.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-28.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zimbabwe increased by +30 percentage points.
In value terms, the largest smoked fish other than salmon and herring importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a combined 91% share of total imports.
Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +83.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed tangible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
