Smoked Salmon Market Size in SADC

The SADC smoked salmon market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, which is down by -3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 9.9%. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, smoked salmon production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon decreased by -25.3% to X tons, falling for the seventh year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, smoked salmon exports reached $X in 2022. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +1.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Seychelles (X kg), Tanzania (X kg) and Botswana (X kg) - together made up 7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to smoked salmon exports from South Africa stood at -6.9%. At the same time, Botswana (+60.8%) and Seychelles (+13.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +60.8% from 2012-2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Seychelles (+2.4 p.p.), South Africa (+2.1 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest smoked salmon supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Seychelles ($X), with a 2.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 1.3% share.

In South Africa, smoked salmon exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Seychelles (+8.1% per year) and Tanzania (-5.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a prominent expansion. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+14.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, supplies from abroad of smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon increased by 1.9% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, smoked salmon imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +53.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mauritius was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Seychelles (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together mixing up a 41% share of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Mauritius increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+25.9%), Seychelles (+24.2%), Mozambique (+24.1%) and Madagascar (+13.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +25.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-1.6%) and Angola (-15.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritius (+25 p.p.), Seychelles (+8 p.p.), Madagascar (+7.6 p.p.), Namibia (+6 p.p.) and Mozambique (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-4.1 p.p.) and Angola (-29.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon in SADC, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Seychelles, with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mauritius totaled +7.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Madagascar (+8.8% per year) and Seychelles (+18.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
