Sorbitol Market Size in SADC

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the SADC sorbitol market, when its value decreased by -8.9% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a resilient expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Sorbitol Production in SADC

In value terms, sorbitol production expanded remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. In 2021, the amount of sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol) exported in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 262% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sorbitol exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 363%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), achieving a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sorbitol exports from South Africa stood at +23.2%. At the same time, Swaziland (+83.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +83.9% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Swaziland increased by +12 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sorbitol supplier in SADC, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In South Africa, sorbitol exports increased at an average annual rate of +16.1% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -28.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 371% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+7.4%).

Sorbitol Imports

Imports in SADC

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol) decreased by -9.6% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 277% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, sorbitol imports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 250% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 95% of total imports in 2021. Mozambique (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +19.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+35.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Africa (+16 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol) in SADC, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 1.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +18.2%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.
