The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 124% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, soybean oilcake exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 131% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Zambia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main exporters of soybean oilcake in SADC, together accounting for near 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), generating a 14% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +40.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest soybean oilcake supplying countries in SADC were Zambia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Malawi ($X), together comprising 99% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Zambia, with a CAGR of +36.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 28% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

After four years of decline, supplies from abroad of soybean oilcake increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 26%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, soybean oilcake imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 63% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons), together comprising a 24% share of total imports. The following importers - Botswana (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - together made up 7.4% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to soybean oilcake imports into South Africa stood at -4.7%. At the same time, Tanzania (+39.0%), Mozambique (+25.9%), Namibia (+18.0%), Botswana (+13.3%) and Zimbabwe (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +39.0% from 2012-2021. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia increased by +5.8, +4.5, +3.2, +2.6 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported soybean oilcake in SADC, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 7.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 7.3% share.

In South Africa, soybean oilcake imports declined by an average annual rate of -4.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+34.0% per year) and Zimbabwe (+3.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mozambique ($X per ton) and Tanzania ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) and Botswana ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
