In 2021, imports of spades and shovels in SADC expanded sharply to X tons, surging by 12% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, spades and shovels imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented the main importers of spades and shovels in 2021, resulting at approx. 27% and 25% of total imports, respectively. South Africa (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mozambique (7.3%), Zimbabwe (6.9%) and Angola (6.8%). Zambia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +16.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Tanzania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 55% of total imports.

Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +13.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
