Spice Market Size in SADC

In 2022, the SADC spice market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Spice Production in SADC

In value terms, spice production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by X% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Madagascar (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), together accounting for X% of total production. Tanzania, Zambia, Comoros and Zimbabwe lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average spice yield soared to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by X% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the yield attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The spice harvested area declined to X ha in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to spice production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, shipments abroad of spices increased by X% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by X% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, spice exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Madagascar (X tons) represented the major exporter of spices, committing X% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Tanzania (X%) and Zambia (X%). The following exporters - Comoros (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - each amounted to a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to spice exports from Madagascar stood at X%. At the same time, Comoros (X%), Zambia (X%) and South Africa (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Comoros emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zimbabwe (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Madagascar (X p.p.), Zambia (X p.p.) and Comoros (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Zimbabwe, Tanzania and South Africa saw its share reduced by X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest spice supplier in SADC, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with an X% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a X% share.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in SADC

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of spices decreased by X% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) held an X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (X%) and Swaziland (X%). The following importers - Lesotho (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to spice imports into South Africa stood at X%. At the same time, Lesotho (X%), Swaziland (X%), Namibia (X%) and Botswana (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Mauritius and Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern.
