The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 144% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood slicing machine exports rose notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the main exporter of splitting, slicing or paring machines in SADC, creating 99% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the splitting, slicing or paring machines exports, with a CAGR of -1.9% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (+9.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest wood slicing machine supplier in SADC.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -23.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 94% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, wood slicing machine imports in SADC fell markedly to X units, declining by -71.9% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 916%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood slicing machine imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 586% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the major importer of splitting, slicing or paring machines, creating 41% of total imports. Tanzania (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Zambia (14%), Mozambique (10%) and Angola (6.7%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Malawi (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood slicing machine imports into South Africa stood at -2.6%. At the same time, Mozambique (+82.7%), Tanzania (+32.8%) and Malawi (+25.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +82.7% from 2012-2021. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3.0%) and Angola (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania, Mozambique and Malawi increased by +17, +10 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported splitting, slicing or paring machines in SADC, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 7.6% share.

In Tanzania, wood slicing machine imports expanded at an average annual rate of +41.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+5.4% per year) and South Africa (-5.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 307% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a buoyant expansion. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
