In value terms, plastic support production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, overseas shipments of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +45.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, plastic support exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +58.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), mixing up a 6.3% share of total exports. Mauritius (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+84.5%), Mauritius (+28.8%) and Tanzania (+17.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +84.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Botswana (+6.3 p.p.) and Mauritius (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-9.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest plastic support supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 3.6% share.
In South Africa, plastic support exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritius (+23.3% per year) and Botswana (+74.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -10.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 21%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X tons of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics were imported in SADC; waning by -2.6% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +5.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 36%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, plastic support imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the largest importer of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 39% of total imports in 2022. Angola (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Zimbabwe (11%), Mozambique (6.8%), Tanzania (6.6%) and Zambia (5.8%). Namibia (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+10.5%), Mozambique (+7.1%), Tanzania (+6.7%), Angola (+4.3%), Zambia (+4.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.4%) and Namibia (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Zimbabwe (+3.9 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-1.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 6.9% share.
In South Africa, plastic support imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+11.1% per year) and Tanzania (+10.7% per year).

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
