Plastic Supports Market Size in SADC

The SADC plastic supports market fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -10% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic supports production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +1.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Plastic supports exports soared to X tons in 2022, picking up by 416% on the year before. Overall, exports showed a significant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +21.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+90.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +90.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of South Africa (+3.4 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest plastic supports supplier in SADC, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 2.3% share of total exports.

In South Africa, plastic supports exports expanded at an average annual rate of +24.5% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 47% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while South Africa amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+19.4%).

Imports in SADC

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of spools, cops, bobbins and similar supports of plastics decreased by -22.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 107% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, plastic supports imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the key importer of spools, cops, bobbins and similar supports of plastics, committing 42% of total imports. Angola (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (14%), Mauritius (6.2%), Namibia (5.2%) and Botswana (4.6%). Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic supports imports into South Africa stood at +12.9%. At the same time, Angola (+26.5%), Botswana (+11.3%), Madagascar (+9.3%) and Namibia (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +26.5% from 2012-2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mauritius (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Angola and Botswana increased by +20, +16 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spools, cops, bobbins and similar supports of plastics in SADC, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +8.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+2.8% per year) and Angola (+13.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
