Starter Motor Market Size in SADC
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in the SADC starter motor market, when its value decreased by -0.4% to $X. The total consumption indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +87.6% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, starter motor production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 54%. Exports in SADC
In 2021, approx. X units of starter motors and dual purpose starter generators were exported in SADC; dropping by -25.9% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, starter motor exports dropped to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Botswana (X units), Zambia (X units) and Tanzania (X units) - together made up 7.4% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to starter motor exports from South Africa stood at -11.9%. At the same time, Tanzania (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012-2021. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zambia (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Botswana increased by +2.1 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest starter motor supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 1.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 1.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -4.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+17.6% per year) and Zambia (-7.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 26% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 99%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Starter Motor Imports
Imports in SADC
For the fifth consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in supplies from abroad of starter motors and dual purpose starter generators, which increased by 16% to X units in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 16%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, starter motor imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importing country with an import of around X units, which recorded 65% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X units), committing a 21% share of total imports. Angola (X units), Namibia (X units), Zambia (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Tanzania (X units) took a minor share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+19.2%), Tanzania (+6.0%) and Namibia (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-2.1%), Angola (-2.5%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Botswana increased by +14 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported starter motors and dual purpose starter generators in SADC, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 5.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (-1.1% per year) and Tanzania (+7.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, growing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
