Steam Turbine Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC steam turbine market increased by 3.5% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption showed significant growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Steam Turbine Production in SADC

In value terms, steam turbine production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,453% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Steam Turbine Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of steam turbines and other vapor turbines, when their volume increased by 3.5% to X units. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a precipitous decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 704% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, steam turbine exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a precipitous slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 307% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), constituting a 9.6% share of total exports. Zambia (X units), Malawi (X units) and Swaziland (X units) took a minor share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of steam turbines and other vapor turbines. Malawi (-1.7%), Zambia (-2.4%), Swaziland (-7.4%) and Tanzania (-30.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Zambia, Malawi and Swaziland increased by +78, +3.6, +2.7 and +1.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest steam turbine supplier in SADC, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malawi ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 5.5% share.

In South Africa, steam turbine exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malawi (+26.3% per year) and Tanzania (-20.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, growing by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a slight increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 208%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per unit), while Swaziland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+28.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, supplies from abroad of steam turbines and other vapor turbines was finally on the rise to reach X units after eight years of decline. In general, imports, however, faced a dramatic shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the largest importer of steam turbines and other vapor turbines in SADC, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), generating a 19% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Zambia (X units), Mozambique (X units), Lesotho (X units), Namibia (X units) and Angola (X units) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to steam turbine imports into South Africa stood at -47.3%. At the same time, Namibia (+33.0%), Mozambique (+31.3%), Zambia (+16.7%), Lesotho (+14.8%) and Tanzania (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +33.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-11.4%) and Angola (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Namibia and Angola increased by +19, +4.3, +4.1, +2.8, +2.5, +2.2 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tanzania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 85% share of total imports. Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia, Angola and Lesotho lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

Namibia, with a CAGR of +57.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, falling by -12.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw tangible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while Lesotho ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+18.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
