Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, stranded wire exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of stranded wire, ropes and cables, creating 81% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), achieving an 11% share of total exports. The following exporters - Angola (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 4.7% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to stranded wire exports from South Africa stood at -9.9%. At the same time, Mozambique (+74.7%) and Angola (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +74.7% from 2012-2021. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Mozambique (+11 p.p.) and Angola (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-15.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest stranded wire supplier in SADC, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -6.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mozambique (+77.1% per year) and Zambia (-7.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 50% against the previous year. Export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Stranded wire imports expanded notably to X tons in 2021, picking up by 9.3% on 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, stranded wire imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 41% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Mozambique (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Angola (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Zambia (X tons). All these countries together took near 46% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to stranded wire imports into South Africa stood at -3.6%. At the same time, Mozambique (+24.8%), Botswana (+15.6%), Tanzania (+11.5%) and Namibia (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +24.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-2.0%) and Angola (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+9.5 p.p.), Tanzania (+6.9 p.p.) and Botswana (+4.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.3% and -21.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported stranded wire, ropes and cables in SADC, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with an 11% share.
In South Africa, stranded wire imports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+14.0% per year) and Mozambique (+19.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild contraction. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
