Pasta And Couscous Market Size in SADC

In 2022, the SADC pasta and couscous market decreased by -0.8% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after eight years of growth. The total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -10.0% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pasta and couscous production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 13%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, shipments abroad of stuffed pasta and couscous decreased by -25.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, pasta and couscous exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 42%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Mozambique (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Namibia (X tons), together reaching 98% of total export. Botswana (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Namibia (with a CAGR of +18.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pasta and couscous supplying countries in SADC were Namibia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Mozambique ($X), with a combined 98% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Namibia, with a CAGR of +24.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 25% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pasta And Couscous Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of stuffed pasta and couscous decreased by -2.1% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pasta and couscous imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of stuffed pasta and couscous in SADC, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 31% of total imports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Zimbabwe (12%), Zambia (8.3%), Namibia (6.1%), Mozambique (5.5%), Madagascar (5.4%) and Angola (4.9%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Namibia (with a CAGR of +25.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 61% of total imports. Namibia, Zambia, Madagascar, Mozambique and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Namibia, with a CAGR of +22.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
