Sugar Crop Market Size in SADC

The SADC sugar crop market fell markedly to $X in 2022, waning by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a deep reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Sugar Crop Production in SADC

In value terms, sugar crop production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of sugar crop production, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, sugar crop production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Swaziland (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Zambia (X tons), with a X% share.

In South Africa, sugar crop production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (X% per year) and Zambia (X% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of sugar crops in SADC reduced slightly to X tons per ha, approximately equating 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the sugar crop yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of sugar crops production in SADC contracted slightly to X ha, standing approx. at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of sugar crops decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sugar crop exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a significant decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the largest exporter of sugar crops in SADC, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Angola (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons). All these countries together took near X% share of total exports. Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (X%), Angola (X%), Malawi (X%) and Botswana (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zimbabwe (X%) and Lesotho (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Botswana, Angola, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Zambia increased by X, X, X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, overseas purchases of sugar crops decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the fifth consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sugar crop imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Namibia (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) represented roughly X% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), committing a X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Botswana (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Lesotho ($X), Swaziland ($X) and Namibia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined X% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Botswana, which accounted for a further X%.

Import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
