The SADC sugars market rose rapidly to $X in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In value terms, sugars production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of sugars, sugar ethers and salts were exported in SADC; declining by -28% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 377%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sugars exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 139% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of sugars, sugar ethers and salts, making up 55% of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) held a 28% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (13%). Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +35.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Swaziland ($X) emerged as the largest sugars supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 1.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Swaziland amounted to +10.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-7.5% per year) and Namibia (-12.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 157% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 292%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+16.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Sugars Imports

Imports in SADC

Sugars imports expanded modestly to X tons in 2021, rising by 2.9% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sugars imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a resilient expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sugars, sugar ethers and salts imports, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo (-18.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+60 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sugars, sugar ethers and salts in SADC, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 0.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +15.3%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 158% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded resilient growth. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+10.1%).
