The SADC sugary soft drink market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 39%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of sugary soft drinks increased by 23% to X litres, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 100% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, sugary soft drink exports totaled $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 46%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X litres) was the major exporter of sugary soft drinks, creating 65% of total exports. Tanzania (X litres) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Zambia (8.6%).
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+81.5%) and Tanzania (+49.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +81.5% from 2012-2022. Tanzania (+22 p.p.) and Zambia (+8.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -20.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sugary soft drink supplier in SADC, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +8.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+43.2% per year) and Zambia (+80.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per litre in 2022, dropping by -6.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 20%. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per litre), while Zambia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (-0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of sugary soft drinks imported in SADC skyrocketed to X litres, rising by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 44%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, sugary soft drink imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X litres), distantly followed by Botswana (X litres), Swaziland (X litres), Zimbabwe (X litres), Namibia (X litres) and Lesotho (X litres) were the key importers of sugary soft drinks, together creating 89% of total imports. Mauritius (X litres) and Comoros (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +41.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sugary soft drinks in SADC, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +6.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Botswana (+25.2% per year) and Mauritius (+8.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per litre, which is down by -4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 6.6%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per litre), while Botswana ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
