In 2022, the SADC barium or aluminium sulphates market increased by 1.4% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barium or aluminium sulphates production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +2.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 37%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, shipments abroad of sulphates of barium or aluminium increased by 24% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 61%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barium or aluminium sulphates exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 79% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together constituting an 18% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+19.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+7.5 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-10.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest barium or aluminium sulphates supplier in SADC, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -6.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+3.9% per year) and Tanzania (+3.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Sulphates Of Barium Or Aluminium

Imports in SADC

In 2022, supplies from abroad of sulphates of barium or aluminium was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, barium or aluminium sulphates imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) represented roughly 71% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), achieving a 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Madagascar (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Angola (with a CAGR of +13.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X), South Africa ($X) and Angola ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 73% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Tanzania and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

Among the main importing countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +12.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
