Sulphites Market Size in SADC

The SADC sulphites market totaled $X in 2022, increasing by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a moderate expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Sulphites Production in SADC

In value terms, sulphites production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of sulphites exported in SADC dropped to X tons, reducing by -1.6% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 290% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sulphites exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 151%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Zambia was the largest exporter of sulphites in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2022. Namibia (X tons) took a 32% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (7.5%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Namibia (with a CAGR of +117.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest sulphites supplying countries in SADC were Zambia ($X), Namibia ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 96% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Namibia, with a CAGR of +125.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 2.4% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sulphites export price increased by +27.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sulphites Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X tons of sulphites were imported in SADC; growing by 21% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sulphites imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of sulphites in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 55% of total imports in 2022. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 22% share, followed by Tanzania (14%). The following importers - Namibia (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - together made up 6.3% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+37.2%) and Tanzania (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +37.2% from 2012-2022. Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Namibia increased by +9.3 and +3.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Tanzania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 81% share of total imports. Angola and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

Among the main importing countries, Namibia, with a CAGR of +29.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 23%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
